How to Prepare for a Job Interview

Walking into a job interview feeling confident comes down to preparation. Whether you're applying for an office role, a warehouse position or something in sales, getting ready beforehand will help you make a great impression.

First – Let's Be Real

Your attitude matters more than a polished CV. Employers want to see genuine enthusiasm, reliability and a willingness to learn. If you're nervous, that's normal — it shows you care. Just be yourself and let your personality come through.

Research the Company

Before your interview, spend some time learning about the business:

  • Visit their website and read the "About Us" section
  • Check their social media for recent news or updates
  • Understand what products or services they offer
  • Look up any recent company news or achievements

Being able to talk about the company shows you're genuinely interested, not just applying anywhere.

Understand the Role

Re-read the job description carefully. Make sure you understand:

  • The main responsibilities of the role
  • What skills and experience they're looking for
  • Any specific requirements (software, qualifications, licences)
  • The working hours and location

Think about examples from your own experience that match what they're asking for.

Prepare Your Answers

You don't need to script every answer, but it helps to think about common questions:

  • "Tell me about yourself" – keep it focused on your work experience
  • "Why do you want this job?" – link it to the role and company
  • "What are your strengths?" – give specific examples
  • "Tell me about a time when..." – use real situations from previous roles

Plan Your Travel

Don't leave this to chance:

  • Check the address and how long it takes to get there
  • Do a practice run if you can, especially during rush hour
  • Aim to arrive 10-15 minutes early
  • Have a backup plan in case of traffic or delays

Dress Appropriately

What you wear depends on the role, but generally:

  • Office roles – smart/business casual is usually safe
  • Warehouse roles – clean, practical clothing (you may be shown around)
  • When in doubt, slightly overdressed is better than underdressed
  • Make sure your clothes are clean and pressed

What to Bring

  • A copy of your CV (even if you've already sent it)
  • Photo ID if requested
  • Any certificates or documents they've asked for
  • A notepad and pen
  • Questions you want to ask

During the Interview

  • Greet everyone politely – reception staff, other employees
  • Make eye contact and offer a firm handshake
  • Listen carefully to each question before answering
  • Take your time – it's fine to pause and think
  • Be honest. If you don't know something, say so
  • Show enthusiasm for the role and company

Questions to Ask

Always have a few questions ready. It shows you're engaged:

  • "What does a typical day look like in this role?"
  • "What's the team like?"
  • "What are the opportunities for development?"
  • "What are the next steps in the process?"

After the Interview

  • Thank the interviewer for their time
  • If you're working with a recruiter (like us!), let them know how it went
  • Reflect on what went well and what you'd do differently
  • Follow up if you haven't heard back within the timeframe they gave
